Hawks get clipped by Rebels

Hardin Valley – Hardin Valley Academy’s football has accomplished plenty during the first half of the 2025 season.

The Hawks recently won their first Region 2-6A game since 2020, when they toppled Bearden on Sept. 19, and they have already tripled their win total from last season.

But HVA had a tough outing Friday night as they came up on the short end of a 45-6 decision against state powerhouse Maryville in their consecutive home game.

The Rebels (5-1 overall, 4-0 in the region) wasted little time seizing control of the contest as they scored on six of their seven possessions in the first half and amassed 439 yards of total offense over the first 24 minutes.

The Hawks (3-3, 1-1) conversely mustered just 23 yards of total offense and one first down before halftime.

Maryville had six touchdowns in the first half on its way to opening a 42-0 lead at the break. Rebels’ quarterback Will Jones was 19-for-24 through the air. He totaled 288 passing yards and threw four touchdown passes.

Maryville running back Cam Porter had 49 yards on four carries and scored one touchdown on the ground while Cohen Babely had four receptions for 75 yards and three touchdowns. He also had eight carries for 43 yards as the Rebels notched their fifth consecutive victory.

Maryville, with the game’s outcome no longer in question, Hudson Jamerson kicked a field goal in the second half.

The Hawks scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard plunge by Levi Amey. The ensuing two-point conversion failed.

Defensively, Chance Sharp had a pair of late sacks for Hardin Valley, which travels to take on Farragut (1-5, 1-2) this week at Bill Clabo Field.

Hawks’ coach Tyler Wynn said he hopes his team will use Friday night’s game as a learning experience.

“We good thing about playing in our league is that you get to see championship football, and you get to see it first-hand and we get to compete against it,” Wynn said. “We want to be a championship team and, now, we know what it takes.

“That’s all we can take from this.”
