Lions continue second act success
The Lions (5-3) overcame an early deficit to bring the school’s alumni a 49-35 homecoming win over South Greene.
The loss snapped the Rebels’ six-game winning streak.
After South Greene scored on its first possession after a bad snap on a CCS punt, the Lions didn’t waste time answering the game’s initial score. The Lions pulled to within, 7-6, on a 10-yard touchdown scamper. Pedro Sabat, Concord’s senior kicker added the extra point to tie the game, 7-7, with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter.
After the Rebels (6-2) scored another special teams touchdown on the ensuing kickoff return, making it 14-7, Kohbe Ward threw a game-tying touchdown pass to Don Don Underwood, to make it 14-7.
Then Concord used a special teams play of its own to change the complexion of the game when Alistair Middlebrook recovered the onsides kick, following CCS’s second touchdown..
A short time later, Smith had another touchdown run, making it, 21-14, in a wild second quarter in which the two teams combined to score eight touchdowns in the frame.
Concord’s defense also joined in on the scoring, when Ward, who also plays defensive back intercepted a pass and returned it to the end zone, making the score, 28-14,.From there, the Lions wouldn’t trail again.
After the Rebels trimmed Concord’s lead to 28-21, Smith scored his third touchdown of the contest on another 10-yard run extending the Lions’ advantage to 35-21.
The Rebels scored just before halftime but they would miss the PAT, leaving the score, 35-27.
On its first possession of the second half, Concord cashed in on a touchdown pass by Ward less than four minutes into the third stanza.
South Greene would get as close as 42-35 before Ward salted the game away on another touchdown run my Smith.
While the Lions had their share of penalties and mistakes, CCS coach Steve Matthews was pleased.
“It was sloppy at times and we still have a lot to clean up, (but) this was a great day and a big win for us,” Matthews said. “This was a great environment and I’d like to thank all the people who came out and set this up.”
