Lady Admirals take down longtime rival

A pair of longtime rivals renewed acquaintances early last week as the Farragut Lady Admirals took on Maryville on the hardwood early last week in the Farragut Thanksgiving Classic.

Farragut defeated the Lady Rebels, 58-52, on Monday, Nov. 24, at FHS’s Lynn E. Sexton Gymnasium.

TSSAA re-alignment has moved Maryville from District 4-4A to District 2-4A, but the long-running rivalry hasn’t lost its intensity if last week’s contest was any indication. The contest resembled a heavyweight prizefight as the Lady Admirals and Lady Rebels exchanged punches throughout the game.

Reagan Sheridan helped Farragut get off to a fast start as she scored 11 of her 15 points in the first quarter and helped the Lady Admirals open a 20-14 advantage by the end of the frame.

“I thought Reagan Sheridan did a good job setting the tone early in the game, really in the whole game, but particularly early in the game,” Farragut coach Jason Mayfield said.

The Lady Ads led by as many as nine points late in the second stanza as they pulled out to a 33-24 lead just before halftime. Maryville, however, used a modest 5-0 run and pulled to within 33-29 when guard Zoee Harrison made a three-quarter court shot as time expired in the first half.

The two teams slugged through an evenly matched third quarter and FHS led, 45-41, heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Admirals extended their advantage to 47-41 with 7 minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the contest on a bucket by Trinity Curry and from there, the Lady Rebels never trailed by less than six points.

K.J. McNealy shared high-scoring honors with Sheridan for Farragut as both finished the game with 15 points. Curry, a center added 13 points for the Lady Admirals. She scored seven after halftime.

Harrison had 18 points to lead all scorers.

Mayfield noted the Lady Admirals (and the Farragut boys) agreed to continue playing Maryville.

“All four coaches wanted to continue playing,” he said.

Farragut made a return trip to Blount County to play the Lady Rebels on Tuesday but results were not available at press time.
