Lady Admirals go 2-for-2 on the road versus Panthers

It was a second straight District 4-4A road win for Farragut High School’s girls’ basketball team last Friday night, Dec. 12, at Lenoir City.

The Lady Admirals started the game hot, 10 straight points on consecutive layups by junior post Trinity Curry, followed by consecutive threes by senior guard Lily Mullins, and never looked back.

Typical ebb-and-flow scoring runs by both teams characterized the rest of the game. A late-game push by Lenoir City High School made it interesting, but the outcome was never seriously in doubt. FHS won 46-39 to improve to 5-4 overall, 3-0 District.

“We’re fighting, which is good,” FHS coach Jason Mayfield said. “We’re getting a lot of value out of the people that we got. We’re just trying to put it all

together.”

The first quarter ended with FHS leading 16-8. In the second, another pair of layups by Curry gave the Lady Admirals a 22-9 lead with 5:58 left, the Lady Panthers then went on a 9-3 run over the next 3:44 to pull within seven, 25-18, with 2:14 left.

Yet more layups, again by Mullins and Curry, made it 29-18 at the half.

“I think we played really good,” Curry said. “From the tip we (did) a lot of talking on defense. We had a really good game.”

Each team had trouble finding the hoop in the third period. LCHS outscored FHS 9-8 to trail at the end of three, 37-27. Curry made a jumper in the quarter, and Zoe Porter, a recently emerged three-ball threat, hit a trey.

When Farragut opened the fourth with five straight – a three by Alorah Branam and two free throws by KJ McNealy – the lead was 15, 42-27, with barely four minutes left. The game seemed comfortably in hand.

Not quite. LCHS cut it

to seven, 44-37, with a 10-2 run, but there were only

41 seconds left at the end of the run, and the Lady

Admirals were able to draw fouls and then run out the clock.

“It was pretty much in hand,” Mayfield said. “I never felt nervous about it … just trying to get out of there with a win.”

“The fouls at the end were unnecessary,” said Mullins. “And we probably didn’t

get out far enough on their shooters.”

Curry led all scorers with 16 points. Mullins added nine. Kara Gresham led the Lady Panthers with 14. Sydney Wiggins scored 13.

“We’ve been working hard at it (shooting the three),” said Mayfield. “Getting more of a rhythm and getting girls in good spots.”
