Spring shows hitting local school stages
At Farragut High School, the Admirals Performing Arts Company and the FHS Advanced Acting class will present “The Outsiders” at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 7-8. Tickets will be $5 at the door, and the shows will be held in Vickie B. Wells Auditorium at FHS, 11237 Kingston Pike. A play based off the novel by S.E. Hinton, “The Outsiders” follows protagonist Ponyboy Curtis as he navigates the social scene of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965. In a city divided among the higher-up “Socs” and scrappy “Greasers,” Ponyboy, his band of friends and the Socs learn their lives aren’t so different from one another.
Bearden High School Theatre will be presenting “Jane Eyre,” which will be “a stage adaptation originally devised in 2005 by director Katie Alley, featuring an original score,” according to the school’s theatre website. The show will run from Thursday through Sunday, April 24-26, with the Thursday and Friday shows set to begin at 7 p.m. each night at BHS, 8352 Kingston Pike. That Saturday will feature two shows, one at 2:30 and another at 7 p.m., and there will be a final show Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at BeardenTheatre.com. Advance purchase is recommended due to limited onstage seating.
Hardin Valley Academy will host “The SpongeBob Musical,” based on the series by Stephen Hillenburg and the book by Kyle Jarrow. In the production, audience members will get a closer look at SpongeBob, Patrick and all the happenings in Bikini Bottom. The play will run Friday through Sunday, April 24-26, with shows at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets will cost $5 each for children 12 and under and $10 for adults, and they are available through the HVA Theatre Arts Instagram page.
Knox Catholic’s Irish Arts Theatre Company will feature Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella,” inspired by the 1997 teleplay starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. The show will run Friday through Sunday, April 24-26, and from Friday to Saturday, May 1-2. The April 24-25 shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. each night, as will the show on Friday, May 1. The Sunday, April 26, show will take place at 2:30 p.m., and there will be shows at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Concord Christian School will host its production of “The Prince of Egypt: The Musical” 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 16-17, and 2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in First Baptist Concord’s Worship Center, 11704 Kingston Pike. The production involves a cast of 35 and crew of 15. Tickets are $20 per person and are being sold on the school’s website, concordchristianschool.org or at https://ow.ly/yprt50Yo2eZ. The musical, which is open to the public, depicts the story of Joseph in Genesis 37. Jacob’s favorite son, who had prophetic dreams, was gifted the magnificent robe by his father, but Joseph’s favored status spurred his brothers’ jealousy and they sold him into slavery in Egypt.
Christian Academy of Knoxville Theater will present its spring musical, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 16-17, and 3 and 7 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in the Christian Life Center of CAK, 529 Academy Way, Knoxville.
“Seven Brides” is a romantic comedy musical, set in 1850s Oregon, about Adam Pontipee, who marries and brings his new wife Milly to his mountain cabin. Milly civilizes Adam’s six unruly brothers but they kidnap six women as wives. In the cast of 44 and crew of six, seniors Benton Blevins plays Adam, and Presley Sharp plays Millie in the musical.
New to CAK, Mandy Askins, theater and music teacher and worship arts teacher, learned “the spring musical is such a big deal in every high school.” After polling the students, she was told they wanted to do a “golden age” show.
The high-energy full-scale Broadway-like musical is open to the public. Tickets are on a multi-tier schedule based on seating: Tier 1 (closest to the stage), $31; Tier 2 (middle), $26; and Tier 3 (further back of auditorium), $21; and general admission is $16. Webb School of Knoxville held its latest production, “Something Rotten,” on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, at 7 p.m. and March 1 at 3 p.m.
