Bearden, Farragut trade narrow wins

Longtime rivals Bearden and Farragut renewed acquaintances on the tennis court early last week at West Hills Park.

The two teams split a pair of matches on Tuesday, March 31, with the Lady Bulldogs edging the Lady Admirals, 5-4.

Farragut’s boys won, 5-4.

The Lady Admirals were without several of their top players, who had prior academic commitments.

“That was our first loss of the season for the girls,” Farragut coach Joan Swanson said. “We have players (on both teams), who are committed. We have the valedictorian and we have the salutatorian.

“We have chess masters and scholars. We had two tight matches and that just shows the depth of this team. We have nine seniors (combined), but we also have some young players who have stepped up. We have a talented team.”

The Lady Admirals won at No. 1 singles as Riley Turner (who normally plays in the No. 5 singles) defeated Claire Jenkinson, 8-3.

Farragut also won at No. 2 singles as Olivia Lu defeated Maggie Miller.

Bearden won at No. 3 singles as Emily Odom earned a victory. At No. 4, Farragut’s Cindy Li defeated Addison Smith.

Bearden’s Josie Chattin (No.5) and Sophie Perez (No. 6) notched wins.

In doubles, the Lady Bulldogs won in the No. 1 spot and at the No. 1and No. 3 spots. The Lady Admirals won at No. 2 doubles.

In the boys match, Farragut’s Leyton Lu defeated Nitin Deshpande, 8-1. Bearden won at No. 2 as Yejoon Ham edged Grayer Dunagan, 8-5. The Bulddogs won at No, 3 singles as Tyler Gilday Skyler Meade, 9-7.

At No. 4: Farragut’s Lukas Bukovsky notched an 8-4 win over Will Casciano 8-5. The Bulldogs won at No. 5 singles as AJ Pilant outlasted Kori Faulkner, 8-5. Bearden also won at No. 6 singles as Hudson Goodman defeated Albert Liu, 8-2.

Farragut won two of the three double matches.

Bearden coach Mary Watkins has been pleased with both of her teams this season.

“It’s been good,” she said. “The boys have already qualified for the playoffs, so we’ll see what happens.

“We’ve seen a lot of

improvement.”
