Jamestowne Boulevard signal to improve safety, traffic flow
Farragut residents and senior center visitors should have an easier time turning from Jamestowne Boulevard onto North Campbell Station Road once the town installs a traffic signal at that intersection.
The Farragut Municipal Planning Commission got the project started when it unanimously approved design plans presented by Town engineer Darryl Smith during its meeting Thursday, April 16. Mayor Ron Williams made the motion, seconded by Vice Mayor Scott Meyer, to approve the plans.
Smith said the purpose of the signal is to improve access.
“This has the added benefit of creating gaps in northbound traffic in front of Eddie Courtney Lane,” he said.
“Since my office window looks right at this, kids jaywalk across Campbell Station Road after school through this intersection all the time,” Commissioner Jeff Devlin said. Devlin works with Rural Metro, which is across from Jamestowne Boulevard. “So this signal is needed.”
“Hopefully, they’ll stop jaywalking and avoid getting hit by cars,” Devlin added.
“This project does include signalized crosswalks,” Smith said.
“I’ll add for everyone’s education,” Commissioner Louise Povlin, a Farragut mayoral candidate, said. “The middle school’s emergency off-campus location is either Faith Lutheran Church or the Farragut Community Center, so now we have a safe way for educators to practice getting there. Trying to do that without lights is very difficult.”
“It means a fire drill would be pretty handy, having that crosswalk,” Williams added.
“Obviously, with the fire station right there, is there a way to …” Povlin began to ask.
“It has pre-emption,” Devlin said.
