Farragut wraps regular season with Region II Challenge

Hallie Grace Johnson wound and fired toward the plate last week, striking out Halls’ Harper Bales to begin the Region II Challenge on Friday, April 24.

It was the first of 15 strikeouts for Johnson in her next two appearances, as the Farragut Lady Admirals went 2-1 in a tournament that featured several teams from across the area.

Farragut’s matchups featured a 2-0 win over Halls, a 3-1 loss to Alcoa and a 7-0 win over Powell last weekend.

FHS would have faced Clinton as well, but rain prevented the matchup after the Lady Dragons’ game against Powell was called due to weather.

In Farragut’s first win of the weekend, Johnson recorded five strikeouts with two hits and two walks allowed through five innings.

At the plate, Taylor Albright went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Camryn Shrader put forth one more RBI in the leadoff spot. Rylee Raby added to the output with a hit in three plate appearances.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Sara Matic stole second base and advanced to third on an error before Albright turned a six-pitch at-bat into an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Three innings later, Shrader knocked an RBI double to center to score Albright for the final margin.

Against Alcoa, the Lady Ads proved unable to outlast Lady Tornado pitcher Kaylea Osborne. She rang up nine strikeouts, as Farragut’s sole run came from Shrader on a leadoff homer to start the fourth.

Finally, against Powell, Johnson returned to the circle and recorded 10 strikeouts with four runs and three walks allowed through four innings.

She also went 2-for-2 at the plate with 3 RBI, while Albright, Raby and Jade Buckner recorded 1 RBI apiece.

Over at Hardin Valley, the Lady Hawks outlasted Knox Catholic, 4-3, in their Region II Challenge opener last Friday.

Zoie Driver delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, making her only hit of the day count in dramatic fashion. In the circle, Avery Gran racked up 11 strikeouts while scattering five hits and three runs in a complete game.

But as exciting as that finish was, HVA’s results dimmed in 8-1 and 4-1 losses to Tazewell (VA) and a 3-0 loss to Alcoa.

As for Knox Catholic, the Irish lost 10-1 to Clinton and fell 5-2 to Tazewell while Alcoa finished the tournament at 4-0 with wins over Clinton (4-2), Farragut, HVA and Cocke County (8-1).

After facing Gibbs on Tuesday, April 28, FHS will begin its District 4-AAAA Tournament slate on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 at Bearden High School. The 1-seed Lady Ads will take on the winner of Wednesday’s 4/5 matchup between Hardin Valley and Bearden.
