FHS lax season ends in state semis
After reeling off an impressive 11-3 campaign, the Farragut boys lacrosse team saw its season end last Friday, May 8, in a 12-9 loss to Nolensville in the boys Class AA state semifinals
The Ads may have experienced a bit of Déjà vu, as their season ended with the same sequence as last year: a quarterfinal win over Cookeville and a semifinal loss to the Knights.
FHS trailed 5-1 in the first quarter, clawed its way back within 9-7 and tied it 9-9 with roughly nine minutes to play. But Nolensville broke through with three more goals in quick succession, then held the ball to hang on for the win.
“We’re certainly devastated, but I couldn’t be prouder of these boys and their season,” head coach Ben Sachs said. “This was an amazing team that has had a very long and strong history together. Everyone that has gotten to know them has absolutely loved all that they accomplished together.”
The final statistics reflect those accomplishments, which include two straight region titles and two straight Final Four finishes.
Finn Sachs led the team with 57 goals on the year, averaging 3.8 per contest, as well as 25 assists. Brock Lockhart tallied 45 goals and 26 assists on the year, while Ian Fanta made 139 saves, good for 57.7 percent of the shots that came his way in goal. Moses Burnette finished his senior season with 31 takeaways on defense, and Luke Duenckel accounted for 74 ground balls this season.
“This team has been one of the most talented I’ve had the privilege to coach,” Sachs said. “They exemplify what it means to become a great example by their dedication to the team on the field and their community off the field.”
“I looked forward to every practice, every day, because I knew the quality of men I was going to grow with. I am excited for the boys coming behind them because the trail has been laid and they have an opportunity to step into a team that the culture and brotherhood is committed to thier growth as a lacrosse player, a student and a young man.”
