Building dancers, building tradition

This July, the Farragut High School dance team will be hosting its annual Farragut Junior Admirals Dance Camp Monday through Wednesday, July 20-22.

The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. through noon and will welcome rising kindergarteners through fifth-graders.

The cost will be $75 per child, and anyone who registers by July 1 will be guaranteed a T-shirt. At the camp, dancers will learn jazz and hip-hop dances, sideline dances and will play games with snacks provided each day. Also, there will be a parent performance at the end of the final day.

Each camp provides a chance for future Admirals to learn the skills they can use later in their careers, which has led to a unique sense of camaraderie for any campers who stay with it into middle and high school.

“We’ve been doing it for 20 years, and it’s not limited to just Farragut kids. We take kids from all local schools,” added Lisa Derr, whose daughter Sydney will be a senior on this year’s team. “A lot of our girls in the team started in the junior dance camp, so for a lot of younger girls, coming to that camp sparks their interest.

“It’s so fun because it goes up through elementary school. Then we have kids trying out for the middle and high school teams, and they’ve been coming to the camps and become a part of our dance family. So it’s neat to see that happen every year.”
