  • Farragut’s Will Feehan drives off the first tee at Gettysvue Country Club on Thurdsay, Aug. 17. Feehan led Farragut with a score of 35 in its win over Bearden. - Jake Nichols

Will Feehan stepped up to the first tee, moved into his backswing and smacked a drive into

the sweltering summer air at Gettysvue Country Club.

It was the first swing of the afternoon, as Farragut High School took on Bearden and Powell in a match last Thursday, Aug. 13.

Feehan led the Admirals with a score of 35 through nine holes, while Dane Helzer and Tate S. (no last name given) shot the same for the Bulldogs and Panthers, respectively.

The Ads outshot their rivals 153-155, winning by two strokes while the Lady Admirals shot a 78 to beat Bearden and Powell by 28 strokes.

On the girls side, Sophie Williams led FHS with a 38 while Olivia Coleman and Harper Holmes totaled 40 and 44, respectively.

“Both teams played really well,” head coach Ryan Mahoney said. “They’ve both been putting in work on their games, and it’s finally starting to show in matches. We were really happy with how they played.

“Will’s been playing great all year, really consistent. He’s so steady and shoots somewhere around even par, one over or one under,” he added of Feehan. “Then Sophie, she continues to impress us. She has played great in a couple tournaments in matches and qualifiers, so it was really good to see her post that score.”

Quinn Beck finished two strokes behind Feehan with a 37, and Brady Beaver totaled 39 with a pair of 42s from Matthew Dickens and Blaine Whitehead.

The teams had to battle through a bit of weather, as dark gray clouds gathered just as the female participants began to tee off.

But all three teams managed to finish their rounds, as FHS collected victories.

“That’s part of golf, is we don’t have the benefit of playing inside,” Mahoney said. “You kind of have to watch the radar and just make sure lightning isn’t within the area to give the kids time to get off the course. Thankfully the storm passed and we got the round in.”

This week, the Ads continued their season against Maryville on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and they will face West and Maryville today, Aug. 19, at Fox Den.
