Warriors rally past Rams
Essentially, the saying means to focus on one’s effort, not the scoreboard.
Last Thursday, Oct. 15, the Warriors lived that mantra in real time. After trailing Grace Christian 27-10, they stormed back for a stunning 31-27 victory with quarterback Seaton Moffett punching in the game-winner
with just over a minute to go.
He finished the night 16-for-26 for 173 yards and one score through the air, adding 11 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for 06 total yards.
“All the hard work paid off. I couldn’t do it without our o-line and coaches and receivers,” Moffett said. “I knew if I got the ball, I was going to make a play. And I saw green grass and made one. It had to be done.”
Prior to the game-winner, Moffett delivered a 12-yard scamper to set up the game-tying touchdown by Isaac Kannah. And when CAK got the ball back, the junior quarterback made sure they took advantage.
“He’s an absolute stud, man,” Speck said. “He’s a competitor and we knew, to win this game, 16 would have to make plays. He did it.”
The comeback spoiled a solid third quarter for the Rams, who turned a 13-10 halftime advantage into a 17-point lead before CAK began to chip away.
Moffett hit teammate Henley Hayes for a 44-yard strike to bring the Warriors within 10, then Kannah’s touchdown with 3:48 set the table for Moffett’s final maneuver. He dove into navy blue pay dirt with 1:02 left on the clock, and Bennett Jelks picked off a pass from Grace quarterback Corbin Hobson to ice the comeback victory.
After addressing his team, Speck reiterated the same phrase he had just uttered in the huddle.
“Man, all we’ve talked about all week, really all year, is to surrender the outcome,” he said. “You try to get to a standard. We’re not worried about the scoreboard. We’re playing to a standard, and we’re just trying to take one play at a time. That’s what we try to get guys to focus on at all times, and they did it and hung together.
“Tonight was a culture-defining moment. The seniors you see right now were freshmen my first year. We have been building this, and this is a player-led team. And they got it done all night.”
