Courtney steps down as Farragut football coach

For the first time in more than three decades, someone without the last name Courtney will lead the Farragut Admirals football program.

Farragut football coach Geoff Courtney, the son of TSSAA Hall of Famer Eddie Courtney, announced his resignation Tuesday, Nov. 3.

In his time at the helm, Courtney posted a record of 8-24 with a 1-9 record his final season in 2026. Prior to being named the head coach in 2024, Courtney served on his father’s staff as offensive coordinator, helping Farragut reach its lone state title in 2016.

Eddie Courtney did not have a comment, but Geoff detailed his decision in an email sent to the farragutpress Tuesday.

“After much thought and reflection, I have made the decision to step down as Head Football Coach at Farragut High School, effective immediately,” he said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to lead the Farragut Admirals football program over the past three seasons. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside so many outstanding young men, dedicated coaches and supportive families who have invested so much into this program.”

In his statement, Courtney thanked his players for their commitment, effort and willingness to grow and develop on and off the field.

“While our results on Friday nights did not meet the expectations of this proud program, I could not be prouder of the growth, perseverance and character these young men have demonstrated throughout our time together,” he said. “To our assistant coaches, thank you for your loyalty, dedication and countless hours of work on behalf of our players. Your commitment to developing young men extends far beyond the game of football, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside you.

“I also want to thank the Farragut administration, our parents, and the entire Farragut community for their support throughout these past three seasons. The tradition, pride and expectations surrounding Farragut Football are what makes this program special.

“Farragut Football has a rich history and a standard of excellence that deserves to be upheld. Although we did not achieve the competitive success we worked toward, I remain proud of the foundation we worked to build and the relationships established along the way.

"My sincere hope is that the administration, coaches, players, and community can move forward with a shared vision, united in their commitment to building a top-tier football program capable of consistently competing with the best in Class 6A. Farragut has the tradition, resources and community support to achieve that standard, and I wish everyone involved nothing but the very best as they work toward that goal.

"As for me, I look forward to spending some valuable time with my family, reflecting on the experiences and relationships that have shaped me and seeing where the next chapter of life leads. Coaching has always been about much more than wins and losses, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have made a difference in the lives of the young men I have been fortunate enough to coach.

“I wish the players, coaches, administration, and entire Farragut community continued success. I will always be thankful for my time as an Admiral and will carry out the relationships and memories from these past three seasons with me. Thank you, Farragut, for the opportunity to lead.”

Farragut athletic director Donald Dodgen offered a statement on Courtney’s resignation, citing a relationship that dates back more than three decades.

“I’m thankful for what he’s done for Farragut High School in the classroom and on the football field," Dodgen said. "I hate to see this happen but I totally understand why. I’ve known Geoff a long time, since he was a little kid, and the Courtney family goes back a long way at Farragut. Geoff and his father Eddie have both been very vital to the Farragut High School program. I wish him all the luck in the world. And anything I can do to help him or his family, I am more than happy to do.”

As far as the next coach, Dodgen noted they have not begun a search yet.
