Letter to the editor
Dear Editor,
Since 1980, Farragut has had a development plan created with strong public involvement. This process has worked. It has allowed our town to grow while protecting its residential character. However, the current plan is now outdated and a guiding document that carries the Town into the future is needed.
Protecting Our Community
Farragut was founded to protect its residential character from the haphazard development Knox County was known for. One of the Town's first actions was adopting the Community Development Plan to limit growth that did not match the community's wishes. The Town has kept updating that plan with public input ever since.
History of Planning
• 1982: The Town adopted its first zoning ordinance and zoning map.
• 1991: An extensive community development plan, Farragut 2000, was adopted.
• 2001: The Farragut Land Use and Transportation Policy Plan was adopted.
• 2012: The Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) was adopted, with strategies and a future land use map (FLUM).
From 2018 to 2024, the community updated several transportation corridors on the FLUM. The public also removed high-density multifamily housing from the map. However, the outdated 2012 strategies still allow high density. The next update should remove high density from the plan and address any remaining concerns on the FLUM.
Why the CLUP Matters
The CLUP is a guiding document. Decisions made by the Planning Commission must be consistent with it. A proactive plan protects our values and gives homeowners predictability about future development, which could spiral out of control without one. A clear plan lets the Town guide development rather than simply react to proposals. It also tells developers what the community expects while eliminating the opportunity for sweetheart deals to be made by the appointed or elected officials.
Residents Have Voice
Workshops, hearings, surveys, and steering committees give residents real say. This public input builds trust and helps ensure elected officials do not make sweetheart deals with developers that ignore the public's collective demands.
Looking Ahead
Public involvement has shaped Farragut's plans for more than 45 years, and that should continue. The updated CLUP should be commitment to Farragut's citizens. It should guide elected and appointed officials toward the community's shared vision, not the interests of individual developers.
